“I am betting nine out of 10 times, when a woman asks for a female detective the story is going to be untrue.”—
Lt. Adam Lamboy, commander of the Manhattan Special Victims Squad, in a story about how the NYPD Special Victims Division does its job, explaining that if a woman who reports being raped requests a female detective, the request is “taken as a sign of possible deception” because the “operative theory is that women who are lying think female cops will be more receptive to their stories.” (via fujiidom)
Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, she’s asking for a female officer to speak with because she was just violently and sexually assaulted by a man and is uncomfortable in the imposing presence of male officers after something like that. Maybe it’s because she experienced a traumatizing event and needs to talk to someone who won’t look at her and talk down to her like it’s her fault for being raped, instead of the rapist’s fault for RAPING HER. Maybe it’s because she needs to be in the presence of someone who won’t assume she’s lying simply because she’s a woman. Maybe it’s because she needs someone who will listen without shaming her for being the victim.
Also, I’d really like to know where the fuck that statistic came from. Nine out of ten women are reporting rapes that aren’t true? Out of the very few women brave enough to even REPORT that they’ve been raped, how many of them are liars? And to be clear, if the man that rapes/sexually assaults a woman gets off scott-free after getting arrested and tried, that doesn’t make her a fucking liar.
